From the Introduction: "The church of the London Oratory, popularly but incorrectly known as 'Brompton Oratory,' is the second largest Catholic Church in the city, with a nave exceeding in width even that of St. Paul's Cathedral. How this great Italianate building, once described as 'a museum piece in a street of museums', came to be built near the end of the nineteenth century will be better understood when something has beens aid about the Congregation of the Oratory itself, the community of priests who live in the house adjacent to the church, and serve the parish of which it forms the centre."
